The YMCA of Greater Providence held its 2nd annual Y Heroes fundraising luncheon at the RI Convention Center. We honored Marc Perlman and Ocean State Job Lot; Lammis Vargas from the Cranston Y’s Branch Council; Ellen Collis and Gloria Hall from Barrington for their leadership and financial impact on the Barrington YMCA and our Aquatics program; Michael Baker, his father George and grandfather George for their lifetime achievements at the Newman (Seekonk) YMCA.

Over 600 people were in attendance along with over 50 corporate sponsors. The keynote speaker was NE Patriots All-Pro fullback and Brown University graduate Jimmy Devlin. Coach Ed Cooley of Providence College and YMCA of Greater Providence Board Member, engaged the crowd as only he can, helping to reach our fundraising goal. The event showcased a new initiative for military veterans in need of financial assistance to become Y members along with their families. So far we have 75 veterans who are taking advantage of this initiative. As your CEO, I want to thank all our supporters and members who assisted in this effort. Our Y members contributed $25,000 to this cause at all our branches. You are to be commended and thanked for living the mission of the Y. Your efforts and love of community certainly stands out and are appreciated!
