Voices of Impact:
Why the Y Matters

this is our y

We are fully focused on inspiring change in our communities, from expanding our services for neighbors in need to safe spaces for kids to learn and grow to resources that give everyone the chance to live better lives. When you’re helping to build brighter futures for youth, working to end drowning prevention, improve community health and strengthening collaborations to serve in our communities where needed most, it’s easy to find your motivation to go to work every day!

“I joined the Y, to swim to help my back. And I loved it, and I found it relaxing, and I found it really good for my body.”

BARBARA FLETCHER
Member of Kent County Y

“We pay attention to the needs we hear about different things that are going on at fundraisers and charities. If there's a need and I hear about it, I'm going to find a way to fill that need. So I just thought it was a fantastic fit to involve myself with the Creston YMCA branch.”

CAPT. JUSTIN DUTRA
Cranston Police Department

“For myself, I'm blind. I take the water fitness class and the teacher is wonderful. The teacher will say, raise your right hand, raise your left hand. And I fit right in.”

BARBARA HENRY
Member of Eastside / Mt. Hope Y

“I wake up every day and I'm here, and I'm living, and that's great. So it's definitely changed my perspective on life for sure.”

VICTORIA NUNEZ
Health & Wellness Coordinator, Newman YMCA

“The biggest thing I've seen firsthand is this year when we gave the Uri tour, the kids were able to get bused over, and without the donations, they wouldn't be able to see the behind-the-scenes of athletics, which is a super unique experience. So I think without the donations or the sponsors, things like this would not be able to happen.”

RYLEE KELLY
URI Women’s Athletics Student-Athlete Liason

“It's not just the workout, it's that five-ten minutes that I can speak with Greg or I can speak with Cam, it really helps out my day.”

CHRIS SPIEGEL
Member of Bayside Family Y

“Getting back into a disciplined routine, where I could go up there, meet some people, and have a really social life, not just be isolated in my home .. that was really important.”

MITCH HENDERSON
Lifeguard & Member of Bayside Family Y

“The Y saved my life. People who give to the Y will get back much more than they give, and I guarantee you will be rewarded tenfold when you see with your own eyes the difference your gift is making in the lives of young people.”

DAVID CICILLINE
President & CEO, Rhode Island Foundation

“It's the people that I've met, and the experiences that I've had with those people, and certainly with my wife, that's probably been the most important part of achieving those milestones.”

MARK ROBY
Member of Kent County Y

“When I start to see the same lifeguard, see the same people swimming, and just knowing that we're all kind of here doing it together, it feels less lonely.”

HANNAH LITTLE
Member of Kent County Y
