If you've walked into one of our branches recently, you may have seen a common theme: progress. Over the past couple of months, a great deal of behind-the-scenes work has come to life through a series of ribbon cuttings across our association.
At the Kent County YMCA, we completed a full renovation of the gymnasium floor, providing a safer, higher-quality surface for youth leagues, family fitness, pickleball, and connection. At the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA, the new entrance and lobby are officially open, creating a brighter, more accessible, and more welcoming environment from the moment you walk in. And at the Bayside Family YMCA, the refreshed outdoor pool is open and ready just in time for the sizzling summer season.
A ribbon cutting may last only a few minutes, but the real story is everything it took to get there. It is the generosity of donors who believed in these projects. It is the patience of members who stuck with us through construction, detours, barricades, and temporary disruptions. And it is the steady determination of staff across our association who pushed these projects from idea to completion.
That includes our development team, which helped secure the support needed to bring these improvements to life. It includes our facilities team, which managed contractors, timelines, logistics, and the daily realities of active construction. It includes our branch leadership, which kept operations moving while planning around disruption. And it includes our front-desk and member-facing staff, who answered questions, redirected foot traffic, supported members, and kept our branches welcoming even when the work was messy.
That kind of commitment is exactly what it takes to deliver the quality experience our members deserve. Welcoming, modern facilities do not happen by accident, and they do not stay that way on their own. They require steady care, thoughtful planning, and continued reinvestment — not just when a major project is complete, but every day in between. As we build on this momentum, we remain focused on keeping our branches safe, vibrant, and ready to support the programs and spaces that make the Y such an important part of our community.
Thank you for your patience, your partnership, and your continued belief in the Greater Providence YMCA.
Warmly,
Please join us in welcoming Audrey McClelland, Jason C. Ashley, Justin S. Smith, and Alido Baldera to the Greater Providence YMCA Board of Directors. Each brings a strong record of leadership, service, and community connection, along with experience that will help guide the Y's work in the years ahead. We are excited to have them at the table and grateful for their commitment to our mission.
Y Heroes is our annual celebration of community, connection, and the people and partners who help bring the YMCA's mission to life. We want to extend a big thank you to the John E. Fogarty Foundation for a $10,000 grant at our Bayside, Cranston, and Kent County branches. The Fogarty Foundation has a long history of supporting inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Rhode Island, and this grant will help more individuals of all abilities participate, connect, and thrive at the Y.
