How We're
Listening
Planning for the future of the Kent County YMCA begins with listening.
We have been gathering input through stakeholder conversations, community outreach, and a community leader forum with local voices from education, healthcare, government, public safety, business, nonprofit, and civic life.
What we are hearing is clear: Kent County needs trusted places where children, families, older adults, and community partners can connect, stay healthy, access support, and build opportunity.
That feedback is helping guide our planning for the future of the branch and the broader campus.
What We're
Hearing
Across these conversations, several clear themes have emerged:
- Children and teens need safe, welcoming places to learn, grow, and stay connected outside of school.
- Families need stronger support as they balance work, caregiving, childcare, wellness, and rising costs.
- Older adults need opportunities to stay active, build relationships, and remain connected.
- Residents need accessible wellness programs that support health, prevention, and quality of life.
- Community partners need trusted spaces to work together, share resources, and serve people close to home.
How We're Responding
The conversations we have had are helping us see the future of the Kent County YMCA more clearly.
Families need support. Children and teens need safe places to grow. Older adults need connection. Residents need accessible wellness opportunities. Community partners need trusted spaces where they can work together and serve people close to home.
Meeting those needs requires thoughtful long-term planning. We are looking at the full Kent County YMCA experience: the branch, the broader campus, potential partnerships, and the resources needed to serve the community well for generations.
As part of that work, we are launching a formal information-gathering process to invite ideas from qualified partners. This process will help us better understand how portions of the broader Kent County campus could support future investment in the branch while reflecting community priorities.
This process is called a Request for Expressions of Interest, or RFEI. It does not mean final decisions have been made. It helps us gather ideas, evaluate options, and determine what, if anything, should move forward.
Our goal is to make thoughtful, community-informed decisions that strengthen the Kent County YMCA for the people who rely on it today and for future generations.
Where the Process Stands
RFEI Submissions Are Pending
The YMCA is currently awaiting responses from qualified partners through the Request for Expressions of Interest process.
Submissions Are Not Final Plans
Ideas received through the RFEI will help us understand what may be possible. They do not represent approved projects or final decisions.
Review Begins This Summer
After submissions are received, the YMCA expects to review concepts, evaluate alignment with community needs and our mission, and hold follow-up conversations with selected respondents.
The Community Will Stay Informed
As the process moves forward, we will continue sharing updates with members, neighbors, partners, and community leaders.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is happening at the Kent County YMCA? +
The Greater Providence YMCA is planning for the long-term future of the Kent County YMCA. This includes looking at the needs of the branch, the broader campus, potential partnerships, and the resources required to modernize and strengthen the Y for future generations.
What is an RFEI? +
A Request for Expressions of Interest, or RFEI, is an information-gathering process. It allows the YMCA to invite ideas from qualified partners and better understand what may be possible before any final decisions are made.
Does the RFEI mean a project has already been chosen? +
No. The RFEI does not represent an approved project, final plan, or commitment to move forward with any specific idea. It is an early step that helps the YMCA evaluate options carefully.
Why is the YMCA exploring use of the broader campus? +
The Kent County YMCA sits on a large campus. As we plan for the future of the branch, we are exploring whether portions of that campus could be used in a responsible way to help support future investment in the Y while also reflecting community needs and priorities.
How would this benefit the Kent County YMCA? +
The goal is to strengthen the Kent County YMCA for the long term. Any future concept would need to be evaluated based on whether it supports the branch’s mission, helps create resources for modernization, and responds to the needs we are hearing from members, families, neighbors, and community partners.
When will decisions be made? +
No final decisions have been made. The YMCA is currently awaiting RFEI submissions and expects to begin reviewing concepts this summer. After that review, selected respondents may be invited for follow-up conversations.
Will members and neighbors be kept informed? +
Yes. As the process moves forward, we will continue sharing updates with members, neighbors, partners, and community leaders.
How can I share feedback or sign up for updates? +
You can sign up to receive updates and share feedback through our Kent County YMCA updates form.
