A Message from the CEO
This year, as the YMCA marks 175 years in the United States, we are reflecting on our own deep roots here in Greater Providence. Our local story began in 1853, just two years after the national movement started, when a small, hopeful group opened a single rented room in downtown Providence.
Providence looked very different back then, and so did the Y. In those early days, we offered books, evening classes, job guidance, and a place for people to find their footing in a fast-growing city. As the world changed, we changed with it, expanding educational opportunities, supporting immigrant families and servicemembers, opening Camp Fuller and six regional branches, and launching an adult learning program that eventually grew into Roger Williams University.
Looking back across all those decades,
one truth stands out:
We have never stood still.
While our core mission has not wavered, the way we bring it to life changes with every generation. Today, the GPYMCA cares for children before and after school, gives campers room to build confidence and independence, teaches neighbors of all ages how to be safe in the water, helps adults and seniors stay active, and works to ensure that everyone feels like they belong.
If our founders walked into one of our branches today, many of our programs might surprise them. But I believe they would instantly recognize the heart behind them: seeing what our neighbors need and finding a way to respond.
We are proud of where we have been, but this anniversary is also a reminder that our work continues. By listening to our communities, strengthening our programs, and investing thoughtfully in the places people count on, we can keep delivering the kind of YMCA experience our members and neighbors deserve.
