A Future Worth Building

The Kent County YMCA has long played an important role in the lives of local children, families, and older adults. As we look ahead, we are engaging the community and thoughtfully considering how this campus can evolve to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s opportunities.

Kent County YMCA Project

A Bright Future for the Kent County YMCA

The Kent County YMCA has long served as a hub for children, families, and older adults in our community. Today, the Greater Providence YMCA is taking a thoughtful look at how this campus can continue to meet changing needs and expand its impact over time.

We know people have questions. We also know this work matters. That is why we are approaching it carefully, grounded in community feedback, local needs, and the YMCA’s long-standing role in supporting healthy families and connected communities.

What we’re hearing

At the YMCA, our work is grounded in listening. Through community conversations and feedback, we have heard clearly that local needs are growing and evolving.

Residents, educators, healthcare professionals, public safety personnel, and social service providers have helped identify where the gaps are greatest and where the Y can play the most meaningful role.

Priorities emerging from the community

  • Safe, supervised environments for youth during out-of-school hours
  • Accessible wellness and chronic disease prevention programs
  • Childcare and family support for working households
  • Affordable educational enrichment for children and teens
  • Technology access and digital literacy opportunities
  • Programs that reduce social isolation among older adults

How we’re responding

The feedback we have received echoes what many families and community leaders have been telling us for years: demand for YMCA programs is growing, and the need is real.

In response, the Greater Providence YMCA is exploring ways to strengthen and expand the Kent County YMCA’s long-term impact. This is still an active planning process, and any next steps will be shaped by community needs, thoughtful analysis, and continued engagement.
