Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary

As with any YMCA program, the OST Program at MLK will uphold the YMCA mission, to put Christian principles into practice through activities that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. In the YMCA programs, mission is met through the following means:

Spirit refers to self-esteem and willingness to help others, and the activities that develop these qualities. It also includes a sense of fun and a climate of positive energy. 21st CCLC activities include collaboration with others, conflict resolution skills, and opportunities for success regardless of ability.

Mind refers to learning and to activities that promote learning. 21st CCLC activities include and encourage skill building in problem solving, using school gathered knowledge, and having high expectations each time an activity is undertaken.

Body refers to health, wellness, and the activities that promote these qualities. 21st CCLC activities include and encourage physical fitness and active games.

In practice, the specific activities associated with the various curriculum categories generally take place in one or several of the following contexts, each of which is balanced throughout the day or week.

  • Centers: youth have the option of choosing from among several activities, some relatively unstructured and some that are staff-designed learning centers based in the eight core curriculum areas with a primary focus on literacy
  • Enrichment activities: YMCA staff, teachers and community partners will offer three enrichment periods per day, one in the morning and two in the afternoon. These enrichment activities are fun, hands on and are aligned to district standards. The YMCA staff often use curriculum kits, LARK, GEM, LASER, MATHPIE and SLICE, developed or approved by Providence Public School Teachers made possible through our 21st CCLC grant at Robert L. Bailey.
  • Large Group: Weekly, large group assemblies are held to promote connectedness between the youth that typically are separated by age. We will offer activities that promote opportunities for peer learning and team work.
  • Indoors or Outdoors… all of the contexts and activities above are presented or done in both outdoor and indoor environment.
  • Snack…a nutritious snack, meeting YMCA Activate America Guidelines will be served each day. There are two components to each snack with at least one fruit or vegetable. Water is served as the primary drink.
