Wal-Mart Awards Grant to RI YMCAs
October 28, 2008
$25,000 grant helps promote Healthy Family Home Week.
The Wal-Mart Foundation recently awarded a $25,000 grant to the State Alliance of Rhode Island YMCAs to promote Healthy Family Home Week from November 23-29.
The grant will support activities to educate families – at both YMCAs and Wal-Mart stores – that children live better lives when their families are strong, active, and healthy. The program will help entire families work together at home to make healthier choices and lead healthier.
A major activity will be the distribution of Healthy Family Home Starter Kits to provide families with practical, flexible tools and support for making lasting changes to help establish and achieve their long-term health goals.
The program focuses on three key areas:
- making healthy food choices
- increasing physical activity, play, and exercise
- strengthening family connectedness
The grant was awarded through the Wal-Mart Foundation’s State Giving Program to support unmet needs that are not directly addressed by Wal-Mart’s other funding programs. Areas of focus include education, job skills training, health, and environmental sustainability.
